Archangel Gabriel: meaning, attributes and image

Who is the archangel Gabriel, how to recognize him in art and why the Annunciation is the key subject of his image.
By CrystalPrintArt Published Approx. 1 min read

Archangel Gabriel in the Christian tradition is primarily a messenger. In the Gospel of Luke, it is he who brings the news of the Incarnation to Mary, so the most famous subject with him is the Annunciation.

How to recognize Gabriel

In compositions of the Annunciation, he can be depicted with a lily, a scroll or a greeting gesture. Unlike Michael, he is not usually shown as a warrior.

Lily and light

The lily often symbolizes purity, and a ray of light or a dove can emphasize the spiritual content of the scene. Individual artists use other attributes, so context is more important than a single decorative sign.

Where to place

The image of Gabriel can fit into a prayer corner, office, bedroom or hallway. A full Annunciation scene often requires a wider wall than a single upright figure.

What to check before buying

Evaluate the composition, material, surface, format and mounting. For decorative work, it is important to see real photos to understand how the texture behaves in different lighting.
