Icon or religious picture: what is the difference
An icon and a religious painting may represent the same biblical figure or event, but the words are not always interchangeable. The difference concerns not only the style, but also the tradition, purpose and way of creating the image.
What is called an icon
In the Eastern Christian tradition, an icon is associated with an established language of imagery, theological symbolism, and a liturgical or prayerful context. For her, not only the theme is important, but also the traditional principles of the image.
What is a religious painting
A religious picture can work more freely with perspective, color, realism, decorative materials and author's composition. It can be intended for a home interior and at the same time have an expressive spiritual meaning.
Why is it important to name the job correctly?
The word "icon" should not be used just because the painting depicts Christ, the Virgin or a saint. An accurate description helps the buyer understand what exactly he is choosing: a canonical image in the relevant tradition or a modern decorative religious work.
The materials are also different
Modern decorative works can combine a special print, MDF, epoxy resin, crystals and other elements. This forms a different texture and interaction with light than in the traditional technique of icon painting.
What to choose for the home
Start with a goal. If a specific church tradition and the canonical language of the image are important to you, you should look for the icon itself. If you choose a spiritual theme as part of your home space and modern materials and a decorative effect are important to you, a religious painting is suitable.
