Religious art often conveys meaning not only through the main figure, but also through details. Heart, rays, lamb, stars, crown, dove or flowers help to understand the theme of the composition.

heart

The heart is usually associated with love, compassion, and the inner spiritual life. Its meaning depends on who exactly is depicted and what other symbols are present.

Rays of light

Rays can mean grace, mercy, spiritual light, or the presence of God. In decorative arts, they are often enhanced with glitter, crystals or light accents.

lamb

The lamb has a strong biblical significance. In the stories of the Good Shepherd, it emphasizes care, search and guidance, and in other compositions it can have broader Christological symbolism.

Zori and the crown

Stars are often associated with heavenly light and Marian symbolism. The crown expresses honor, dignity and royal imagery. It is important to consider these details in the context of the whole composition.

Pigeon

A dove in Christian art can indicate the Holy Spirit or peace, depending on the subject. It is the context that helps to avoid an oversimplified interpretation.

Flowers

Flowers can emphasize purity, beauty, life, hope, or a specific tradition. Lilia often appears in scenes of the Annunciation and next to Saint Joseph.

How to read a painting

First look at the main character and the action, then at the gestures, objects, colors and light. The same symbol can have different emphasis in different subjects.
