In Polish religious culture, the Marian tradition is associated with several very different images. Częstochowa, Gietrzwałd, Licheń Virgin and Mother of Mercy from the Gate of Dawn have their own history and visual language.

The Virgin of Czestochowa

One of the most famous images associated with Jasna Góra. It is easy to recognize by the dark tone of the faces and the characteristic features of the Mother and Child composition.

Gietrzwałd

The Gietrzwałd tradition is associated with the Marian apparitions of the 19th century and has a special place in Polish piety.

Licheń

The Licheń tradition is connected with the shrine and the image of the Mother of God, which has its own local history and symbolism.

Gate of Dawn

The image of the Mother of Mercy from the Gate of Dawn differs from the compositions with the Baby Jesus and has a distinct prayer character.

How to choose

If the picture is intended as a gift, you should first find out which tradition is close to the person or family. Format, color, scale and how recognizable the image is to the owner are also important for the home.
