Even a beautiful picture looks out of place if its scale is not related to the furniture. A simple rule is to estimate not only the wall, but also the width of the object on which the work will hang.

Reference for width

For a single painting over a couch, bed, or dresser, a width of about 2/3 to 3/4 the width of the furniture often works well. This is not a hard standard, but a starting point for verification.

Height above furniture

The picture should look like a part of the composition, and not "float" under the ceiling. Leave enough space for pillows, lamps or decor, but do not visually separate the work from the furniture.

Above the sofa

A horizontal composition or a larger format is suitable for a wide sofa. If the work is vertical, it is better to use it on a narrow section of the wall or as part of a thoughtful group.

Above the bed

The safety of fastening is more important than the decorative effect. Consider weight, wall type, and headboard width.

Above the dresser

A chest of drawers allows you to add a lamp or a vase, but do not cover the central figures with them. The picture should remain the main element.

How to check before ordering

Mark the dimensions with masking tape or paper. Check them standing, sitting and from the entrance of the room. Consider the outside size of the frame if one is added.

FAQ

Is 50×70 cm enough above the sofa?

Depends on the width of the sofa. Above a large three-seater sofa, this format may look too small.

Center on the wall or on the furniture?

It is usually better to go by the furniture group to which the picture belongs.
